"Your training only works with shepherd dogs!" This is a remark we often hear. Many people believe the effectiveness of a training method depends on the breed of the dog. But here at Dog Training Dick Staal, we completely disagree.
Who are we?
We are a proud family business specializing in training working dogs, ranging from police dogs and scent dogs to detection dogs. I, Dick Staal, have developed a training system that is applied worldwide. And this system works for every type of dog, regardless of breed or age.
Our Training Principles
How do we achieve this? By adhering to our training principles, which we apply to every dog:
- Positive Training: Our dogs learn from their own behavior.
- Motivation-driven Training: No motivation, no training. We look for the right reward for the dog and make sure this is their driving force during training.
- Food Training: Our unique food training system generates a high level of motivation in every dog. Quick learning results are achieved through many repetitions and rewards.
- Clear Rules: From day one, we are clear about desired and undesired behavior. This prevents the development of problem behavior. Failure to do this can lead to serious problems with certain types of dogs.
- Socialization: We ensure that our dogs are socialized everywhere. If they are still distracted or exhibit undesired behavior, we do not train at that location.
A Unique Approach for all Breeds
We often get comments like "Try that with my chihuahua" or "That might work with a shepherd dog, but not with my hunting dog that wants to chase wildlife". But the basis of my method is universal and successful for every dog.
In the video below, we show two very different dogs: a shepherd dog being trained as a working dog, and a household Pomeranian. Both are trained in the same basic skills such as sniffing, retrieving, and detection work. Although in practice we would always choose the shepherd dog because of his innate qualities, this video proves that our training system works for every dog.
Conclusion
With one dog, we might spend a bit more time on socialization or dealing with undesired behavior. And one dog may understand an exercise faster than another, but the training remains the same.
We believe that every dog has the potential to learn, grow, and excel in what we teach them. Our work is proof that regardless of the breed, every dog can be trained with the right methods and the right approach.
